The big idea
You're free when what you own is about 30 times what you spend in a year. Then you can live on the growth, not your salary.
I'm Dilnawaz. I became financially free at 30 on a salaried income. Not because I picked hot stocks, but because I understood this one idea early.
Freedom is "enough", not "rich"
Financial freedom means your investments can pay for your life. Work becomes optional. You might still work because you enjoy it, but you don't have to.
It is not about owning a yacht. A family spending ₹45,000 a month needs a very different number than one spending ₹2 lakh. Your freedom is tied to your life, not Instagram.
The money tree
Imagine a tree. The trunk is your corpus, the pot you've built. Each year you only eat the fruit (about 3–4% of the tree), not the trunk. If you chop the tree to spend, the fruit disappears next year.
Simple rule of thumb
30× yearly spending
30× means you might live on roughly 3.3% of the pot each year, a common long-term planning assumption.
Inflation is the silent thief
Prices rise. What costs ₹45,000 a month today will not cost ₹45,000 in 20 years. At about 6% inflation, that lifestyle might cost around ₹1.4 lakh a month in 20 years, so your target pot rises too.
Rule of 72 (quick maths)
72 ÷ inflation % ≈ years to double prices
At 6% inflation, prices roughly double every 12 years.
Three levers that move your freedom date
- Spend less: you need a smaller tree.
- Invest more each month: the tree grows faster.
- Give it time: compounding needs years, not weeks.
Aman's chapter
Aman is 26 in Pune. He earns ₹60,000 take-home and spends ₹45,000. He has ₹1.5 lakh in savings and thinks he needs ₹10 crore because that's what YouTube screams.
His real freedom number in today's money is about ₹1.62 Cr, 30× his yearly spending. Without investing yet, his tracker says he may never get there. Lesson 1 is the wake-up call.
Go deeper: why 30×?
Some planners use 25× (spend 4% a year). Others use 30× (about 3.3%) for extra safety in India, where medical costs and inflation can surprise you. The Freedom tracker lets you change this in "My assumptions".
