The big idea
Don't hunt for the needle. Buy the haystack, and pay as little fee as possible.
What a mutual fund is
A mutual fund pools money from thousands of people and buys a basket of stocks or bonds. NAV is the price of one unit that day, like a share price for the basket.
Index funds
A Nifty 50 index fund simply owns India's 50 largest companies in the same proportion as the index. No fund manager guessing which stock will win next quarter.
Fees matter
0.5–1.5% extra per year on regular plans
Over 25 years, that commission can cost lakhs compared with direct plans.
Direct vs regular
Regular plans pay a distributor every year from your money. Direct plans don't. Same fund, lower cost. Check your consolidated account statement: the word "Direct" should appear in the scheme name.
Keep it simple
- One broad equity index fund for long goals.
- Optional: a debt fund or PPF/EPF for shorter safety money.
- You do not need ten funds to look serious.
What to avoid
- Stock tips on WhatsApp and Telegram.
- F&O trading: SEBI's study found about 9 in 10 individual traders lost money in equity F&O over a sample period. [Confirm latest SEBI figure before citing publicly.]
- Switching every year to whichever fund returned 45% last year.
Aman's chapter
Aman's bank RM sold him a regular plan. New SIPs go into a direct index fund. Old units stay, because switching can trigger tax and exit loads, so he doesn't churn blindly.
Tax in a minute
Tax rules on mutual funds change. Before you sell or switch, check current long-term vs short-term capital gains rules for equity and debt. When in doubt, ask a CA, not a YouTube comment.

Common mistakes
- Choosing funds only by last year's return chart.
- Paying regular-plan commission for decades because you never checked.
- Trading options because it looks fast. It's often a wealth destroyer.
Do this today
- Download your CAS (consolidated statement) and check "Direct" and expense ratios.
- Point new SIPs to one low-cost index fund. Don't add a fourth "diversifier" yet.
