The big idea
Investing only works if you never have to sell in a panic. Protect first, grow second.
Why protection comes before SIP
Markets fall. Jobs change. Emergencies don't send a calendar invite. If you invest every rupee and then need cash, you'll sell at the worst time. A safety net lets your SIP survive bad years.
The four bricks (in this order)
1. Expensive debt
- Credit cards often charge about 36–42% a year. Paying them off is a guaranteed "return".
- Personal loans above ~15% deserve priority before equity SIPs.
2. Emergency fund (6 months of spending)
- Keep this in FD, savings, or liquid funds, not in stocks.
- If you spend ₹45,000 a month, aim for about ₹2.7 lakh before you go aggressive on equity.
3. Health insurance in your name
- Office cover ends when the job ends. Buy your own policy while you're healthy.
- Cover amount depends on city and family. Many salaried people start around ₹10–25 lakh sum insured.
4. Term life insurance (only if someone depends on your income)
- Pure term = low premium, high cover, no investment mixed in.
- Rough cover ideas: 10–15× annual income, or enough to clear debts + fund goals.
Don't mix insurance and investing
Endowment plans, money-back policies, and many ULIPs bundle insurance with investments and often grow slower than a simple term plan + SIP. If you can't explain the product in one sentence, pause.
Aman's chapter
Aman's dad bought an LIC policy years ago. It feels safe, but the returns are modest and the money is locked. Aman keeps it, but stops treating it as his emergency fund.
He builds ₹2.7 lakh in FD and savings first. The Freedom tracker stops warning him about a thin emergency fund, and he can finally start equity SIPs without fear.
Go deeper: EPF and office insurance
EPF is great long-term debt for retirement, but it's not your emergency fund (withdrawal rules apply). Office health cover is a bonus, not your only plan.

Common mistakes
- Starting a big equity SIP with zero emergency fund.
- Buying investment-cum-insurance because the agent called it "guaranteed".
- Paying 3% EMI on a car while carrying credit-card debt at 40%.
